These are awesome for backyard partys. Put a full size sheet up on your greenhouse front and project tv or youtubes to watch in the yard. Back yard drive in. I used my thinkpad T480s laptop and a JBL Charge 5 bluetooth speaker to make the magic happen.
Trying to attach thinkpad to a projector I bought from amazon. properties in display say display 1
I followed instructions in step 1 and was watching tv soon.

When Windows only shows Display 1, it means your ThinkPad is completely unaware that a hardware connection has been made to your projector. Because it is failing to detect the secondary hardware, the standard display options won't work until a physical or electronic handshake takes place. [1, 2, 3]
Follow these progressive troubleshooting steps to establish the connection:
1. Force the Hardware Handshake <-- this got mine working
Laptops and projectors occasionally fail to establish an initial handshake if they are connected while both are already running. [1, 2]
Unplug the HDMI or USB-C cable from both your ThinkPad and the projector.
Turn off your projector completely.
Keep your ThinkPad powered on, then plug the cable firmly back into the projector and the laptop.
2. Match the Input Source
Many modern projectors bought on Amazon have multiple inputs (HDMI 1, HDMI 2, USB-C, AV) and do not automatically switch channels. [1]
Locate the Source or Input button on your projector's physical chassis or remote control.
Manually cycle through until it matches the specific port you plugged your ThinkPad's cable into. [1, 2]
3. Change the Display Mode
Windows might have the projection settings restricted to the internal monitor only. [1, 2]
Press the Windows Logo Key + P simultaneously on your keyboard.
A quick menu will slide out on the right. Select Duplicate or Extend. If it was previously stuck on "PC screen only", this forces Windows to search for the output port connection. [1, 2, 3, 4]
4. Use "Detect" in Settings
If you are still only seeing Display 1:
Right-click an empty space on your desktop and select Display settings.
Under the multi-display arrangement diagram, look for the Multiple displays dropdown section.
Click the Detect button to force Windows to scan the hardware ports for an unacknowledged device. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
5. Check Adapter and Resolution Limits
USB-C Adapters: If you are using a USB-C to HDMI adapter or a mini-dock, ensure the ThinkPad port you are using supports Alt-Mode Video Output. Some ports on the side of a ThinkPad are strictly meant for data or charging. Try an alternative port if one is available. [1, 2]
Resolution Bottlenecks: Budget Amazon projectors usually cap out at a native resolution of 1080p (1920x1080). If your ThinkPad has a high-resolution 2K or 4K panel, it might be pushing a signal the projector is physically rejecting. Try lowering your Windows display resolution to 1920x1080 temporarily to see if a link is established. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
If the projector screen still reads "No Signal" after these steps, please let me know:
Are you using a direct HDMI cable, or are you adapting it through USB-C or a docking station?
What is the brand or model of the Amazon projector?
